Instructions

Step 1

Turn on the computer on which you plan to move the “Documents and Settings” folder to another location. Log in to the system as an administrator or under a profile that has administrative rights. Select the location on the disk where you want to copy the system folder and create a new directory.

Step 2

Open the current “Documents and Settings” folder. Click on the "Tools" menu and select the "Folder Options" command in the drop-down window. Open the "View" tab. Go to the "Advanced options" section, check the box next to the line "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck the box next to the line "Hide extensions for registered file types" and the line "Hide protected system folders". After that, click the OK button and close the window.

Step 3

Highlight all folders and files in the “Documents and Settings” folder and copy them to the new directory. Open the main Start menu, go to Control Panel and launch the System snap-in. Open the User Profiles tab and copy the current user profile to a new folder for “Documents and Settings”. Click the OK button, log out and log back in with administrator rights.

Step 4

Go to the Start menu, open Run and type regedit to open the Registry Editor. In the window that opens, select the "Edit" menu and click on the "Find" item. A dialog box will appear in which you need to specify “Documents and Settings” and click the “Find” button.

Step 5

A list of registry keys and settings is displayed, in which replace the original path with the new location of the system folder. Close the registry editor and restart your computer so that the settings of the new “Documents and Settings” folder are registered in the registry. Then you can safely delete the original folder.
