Instructions

Step 1

Open the image to be stencilled in Adobe Photoshop. Use the "Open …" item of the File menu or press Ctrl + O. You can also simply drag the desired file from Explorer or another file manager to the application window with the mouse.

Step 2

Start preparing the image for conversion. Crop it if necessary. Using the Crop Tool, select the desired area. Choose a different tool. Click the Apply button in the window that appears.

Step 3

If the stencil is to be black and white, convert the image to grayscale. Select Image, Adjustments and Desaturate from the menu or press the key combination Ctrl + Shift + U.

Step 4

Change the type of the current layer. Expand the Layer section of the main menu, highlight the New item, select "Layer From Background …". Click the OK button in the New Layer dialog.

Step 5

If the object to be stencil-styled is on a non-uniform or overly dark background, start replacing it. Create a marquee around the object. Where possible use tools like Lasso, use Quick Selection Tool and Magic Wand Tool. Adjust the selection in quick mask mode.

Step 6

Replace the background. Press Ctrl + Shift + I or choose Inverse from the Select menu to invert the selection. Press the Del key or select Clear from the Edit menu. Press Ctrl + D to deselect. Create a new layer by pressing Ctrl + Shift + N. Move it below the image layer and fill it with the desired color using the Paint Bucket Tool. Select Layer and Merge Visible from the menu to merge the layers.

Step 7

Make a stencil from the image. From the menu select Filter, Artistic, "Cutout…". The filter settings window will open. Change the values for Number of Levels, Edge Simplicity, and Edge Fidelity. The first of them determines the number of colors in the stencil, the other two - the accuracy of the approximation. Control the degree of effect of the filter in the preview pane. When the desired result is achieved, click the OK button.

Step 8

View the resulting image. Adjust it with the drawing tools if necessary. For example, you can remove jaggedness at the boundaries of separation of areas filled with different colors using round brushes with rough edges.

Step 9

Save the conversion result. From the File menu, select the "Save As …" item. You can also use the item "Save for Web & Devices …" if you need to further optimize the image.
