In the Windows operating system, the msconfig configuration utility is run through the command line and allows you to enable or disable services, startup programs, edit the boot.ini file, and much more. But sometimes an attempt to run this utility fails.
Necessary
- - AutoRuns program;
- - Windows installation disc.
Instructions
Step 1
If the msconfig utility does not start, then just try restarting your computer to get started. If there is no result, check your computer for viruses. Many of them disable this utility so that an inexperienced user cannot check the startup folder. Update your anti-virus databases and scan the system, then restart your computer.
Step 2
Check if the msconfig.exe file is present on the disk. In the Windows XP operating system, the path to it is as follows: C: /Windows/pchealth/helpctr/binaries/msconfig.exe, provided that the OS is installed on drive C. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, the file path: C: / Windows / System32 / msconfig.exe. If this file does not exist, find it on the network or copy it from the installation disk to the folder where it should be located.
Step 3
A situation may arise when, after cleaning the system from viruses, the utility still does not start, although the file is present on the disk. In this case, it is necessary to check the integrity of the system files. To do this, go to: "Start" - "Run", then enter the command sfc / scannow and click OK. The system file scan will start.
Step 4
If any files are found to have been deleted, a message will appear prompting you to insert the installation CD. After inserting it into the drive, click the "Retry" button. The original versions of the files will be restored. After that, restart your computer, the msconfig utility should start running.
Step 5
What if all the above methods did not help? In this case, you need the AutoRuns utility. After launching it, open the Image hijacks tab. If there is still a virus in the system, then this tab will show the msconfig file and the file (virus) that is launched when you try to open msconfig.exe. The virus file must be deleted. When the AutoRuns utility displays an empty list of Image hijacks, this will indicate that the virus has been removed. In this case, msconfig will start to run normally again.
