Often, when creating a collage in Photoshop, the resulting image needs to be given a certain background. This is a fairly routine operation. But it also requires compliance with a certain sequence of actions.

Step 1
In the document where you want to put the background, create a new layer. Make active the desired window in the Adobe Photoshop workspace. Press Ctrl + Shift + N or use the menu by selecting Layer, New, "Layer …". In the Color list of the dialog that appears, select None. Click OK.
Step 2
Make the created layer the very bottom. Select Layer, Arrange, and Send to Back from the main menu, or press Ctrl + Shift + [.
Step 3
Open or create a background image. In the first case, press Ctrl + O or select File and "Open …" in the menu, in the dialog that appears, select the desired file, click "Open". In the second case, create a new Adobe Photoshop document by pressing Ctrl + N or choosing File and New from the menu, and then using the tools and filters draw the desired picture.
Step 4
Select a background or a piece of background. If you only need a part of the image, activate the Rectangle Marquee Tool and select the desired area with it. If you want the entire image, press Ctrl + A or choose All from the Select menu.
Step 5
Copy the selection of the background to the clipboard. Press Ctrl + C or use the Copy item in the Edit section of the main menu.
Step 6
Paste the copied background into the layer created in the first step. Switch to the desired document window, press Ctrl + V or choose Paste from the Edit menu.
Step 7
If the inserted background fragment differs in size from the image to which it was added, correct it. Use a free transform, activated by pressing Ctrl + T or choosing Free Transform from the Edit menu. You can also apply a scaling warp by choosing Scale from the Transform section of the Edit menu.
Step 8
Change the type of the current layer to background. From the main menu, select Layer, New, and Background From Layer.
