After loading the operating system, the user sees the desktop on the monitor. Its design can be standard or customized in accordance with the tastes and wishes of the user himself. Even a beginner can handle customizing the desktop background. To choose the appropriate design, you need to follow several steps.

Step 1
First of all, it is necessary to distinguish between the concepts of "background" and "background image". In the first case, we are talking about a monochromatic filling of the desktop, in the second - about setting an image. Even if there is no background picture (image), the background remains. One way or another, setting the background and wallpaper is carried out in the same dialog box "Properties: Display". It can be called in several ways.
Step 2
Select "Control Panel" from the "Start" menu. If the contents of the Control Panel are displayed by category, click the Appearance and Themes icon and select the Change Desktop Background task. If the control panel has a classic look, click on the "Display" icon.
Step 3
There is another way: right-click on any free space on the desktop and select the last item - "Properties" from the drop-down menu. The desired Display Properties dialog box appears. Make sure you are on the Desktop tab.
Step 4
To change the background, that is, the fill color of the desktop, find the "Color" section on the right side of the window and click on the arrow button in the field with a drop-down list of different shades. You can choose a background color from the list provided, or click the "Other" button to open a color palette.
Step 5
After selecting a suitable shade on the palette with the left mouse button, click the "Add to set" and OK buttons. In the "Properties: Display" window, confirm your choice by clicking the "Apply" button. If you are not going to change the background image, you can close the window with the OK button.
Step 6
In order to change the background image (wallpaper), select the image that suits you in the "Wallpaper" section by clicking on it with the left mouse button. All changes will be displayed in parallel on the monitor thumbnail located in the upper center of the window.
Step 7
If you want to set your own image as a wallpaper, click the Browse button on the Desktop tab, specify the path to the folder where your image is stored, confirm the new settings with the Apply button and close the Display Properties dialog box.
