The inability to open local drives on a computer running Microsoft Windows is in most cases the result of viruses like Virus. VBS. Small.a that create autorun.inf or autorun.bin files on all hard drives.
The malicious application Virus. VBS. Small.a and similar applications (copy.exe, autocopy.exe) are two-component files that consist of a Visual Basic Script file and a command interpreter batch file. The second component imports the settings of the autorun.reg file into the system registry and extracts and copies the information from the autorun.bin file to the root autorun.txt file. The first component of the virus - autorun.vbs - launches the autorun.bat batch file and copies it to all local drives, including network drives. Removable media can also be infected. Use the following procedure to correct the actions of the virus programs: run the installed anti-virus program and follow the wizard's recommendations to remove malicious files. Click the "Start" button to open the main menu of the Microsoft Windows operating system and go to the "All Programs" item to initiate the procedure for correcting the display settings for hidden and local files. Expand the "Accessories" node and start the "Windows Explorer" application. Open the "Tools" menu of the upper toolbar of the program window and select the "Folder Options" item. Click the View tab of the Properties dialog box that opens and uncheck the Hide Protected System Files check box. Check the box next to "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck the box next to "Hide protected system files". Confirm the selected changes by clicking OK and return to the main Start menu to perform the Disk Mapping operation using the Group Policy Editor tool. Go to Run and enter gpedit.msc in the Open field. Confirm the execution of the utility launch command by clicking OK and expand the "Local Computer Policy" node in the left pane of the application window. Select the "User Configuration" item and go to the "Administrative Templates" item. Select the "Explorer" item and open the "Deny" policy properties window access to disks through "My Computer" in the right part of the application window by double-clicking. Click the Option tab of the Properties dialog box and apply the check box to the Disabled box. Confirm application of the selected changes by clicking OK and open the policy properties window "Hide selected drives from My Computer" on the right side of the explorer window by double-clicking. Go to the parameter tab of the "Properties" dialog box and apply the checkbox to the "Disabled" field. Click click OK to execute the command, and close the Group Policy Editor tool to apply the selected changes.
