It is often necessary to check the performance of the power supply. If the computer is working and there is one known working power supply, then the check is not difficult. But what if this possibility is not available? In fact, you can check the operation of the power supply in the absence of a computer, which can be very useful, for example, with a non-working motherboard or in the absence of a computer.

Necessary

  • - Computer;
  • - power unit.

Instructions

Step 1

The easiest way to check the health of a power supply is when you have an already assembled working computer with a power supply and you decide to test the operation of another power supply. This may be required, for example, if you bought a new PSU in a store and are going to test it.

Step 2

In this case, keep in mind that the power supply must match the form factor and the number of contacts to your motherboard. If there is no problem with this, just remove the old power supply from the case and connect the new one by plugging the power supply connector into the motherboard and connecting the necessary devices (hard drive, optical drive, video card) through it. During normal operation, the fan on the power supply will spin and the computer will turn on and operate without problems. If the operation of the computer turns out to be unstable (accidental reboots, reboots while actively working with an optical drive, etc.), this may indicate poor quality of the power supply unit or its insufficient power. Immediately, take into account that if the power supply unit does not have enough power for your computer, it is better not to connect it: not only may the computer not turn on, you can also damage it.

Step 3

The second option is to check the performance of the power supply without a computer and connection to the motherboard. To do this, take the 20-pin connector from the power supply unit - it is he who connects to the motherboard. Find the green wire and short it to any black wire. If successful, the power supply will turn on and the fan spins in it. This will indicate the performance of the PSU. To test the operation of the unit under load, you can connect one or more CD-ROM drives, a floppy drive to it before short-circuiting the wires. Leave it in this state for an hour or two for testing, if the shutdown does not occur, then most likely everything is in order.
