Many owners of relatively old computers were faced with the problem of lack of hard disk space. It can be solved in various ways, some of which require significant financial costs.

Instructions

Step 1

Try using standard disk compression methods to get started. Open the “My Computer” menu using the “Start” menu or the combination of the Win and E keys. Right-click on the icon of the local disk you want to compress. Select Properties and click the Disk Cleanup button. Remove unused files before compressing the partition.

Step 2

Now check the box next to "Compress this drive to save space." Click the Apply button and confirm the start of the volume shrinking process. Remember that it is highly undesirable to compress the system partition of the hard drive. This will severely slow down your computer. The compression process can take a long time, so it is better to run it overnight.

Step 3

If you are not satisfied with the result, then undo the previous changes. To do this, uncheck the previously marked item. Naturally, this process will take a long time. Now install the latest version of the archiver. Better to use 7-Zip or the latest WinRan utility.

Step 4

These programs are not designed to completely compress a disk, but they are quite effective at shrinking a partition of individual directories and files. Open the My Computer menu and select the folder you want to compress. Click on it with the right mouse button and select the 7-Zip menu and in the opened window select the "Add to archive" option.

Step 5

Enter the name of the future archive. Find the Compression Level menu and set it to Maximum or Ultra. In Modify Mode, select the Add and Replace option. Now press the "OK" button and wait for the archive creation to complete. Keep in mind that some file types do not change much in size, while others can take up 10-20 times less space on your hard drive.
