When you need to format a flash drive, you can use the standard formatting provided by the Windows XP operating system (FAT 16 and FAT 32). But if you need to reformat the USB flash drive to NTFS format, you can find alternative methods for this operation. At the moment there are a large number of programs for performing formatting, but if you do not have the opportunity to download such programs to your hard drive, then you can use another method.

Instructions

Step 1

The basic rule that should be observed before each formatting: save all data from your flash drive, otherwise they will be irretrievably lost. The standard formatting procedure, which is available in the explorer windows, will not be able to help you now, because there is no NTFS system in the options. Therefore, the first thing you need to do is configure the formatter.

Step 2

In order to change the option of saving data while writing to a flash-device, you need to click the "Start" menu - right-click on the "My Computer" icon - click "Properties" (or just press Win + Break).

Step 3

In the window that opens, select the "Hardware" tab - click the "Device Manager" item - "Disk devices" item.

Step 4

All devices installed in the system, including flash drives, will appear in the list that opens. Select your drive - right click on it - select Properties - go to the Policy tab.

Step 5

Check the box "Optimize for fast execution" - click "OK".

Step 6

Now you can go to the explorer - right-click on the flash drive - select "Format". In the window that opens, among the list of formatting systems, NTFS will also appear.

Step 7

After selecting the NTFS system, click "Start". After this operation, it is recommended to change the formatting settings to "Default".
