If you are thinking about upgrading your computer, you will probably want to swap out your processor for a newer model with a higher clock speed or more cores. When choosing a processor, it is worth considering its compatibility with your motherboard. Otherwise, you can waste your time, and possibly money, if the store does not change it for another.
It is necessary
- - A computer;
- - CPU-Z program.
Instructions
Step 1
First of all, you need to find out from which company you currently have the processor installed. Today there are only two of them: AMD and Intel. You can do it like this. Right-click on "My Computer". Then select "Properties". A window will appear in which you can view this information. If you have an AMD processor, it means that you will also need to select a new one from AMD. Likewise with Intel.
Step 2
Now you need to find out the socket of your motherboard. It depends on the socket of the board which processor is suitable for it. This can be done in two ways. The first way is to look in the manual (manual for your motherboard). There must be information about the socket.
Step 3
If you do not have a manual, then the second method will suit you, namely the use of special software. Download the free CPU-Z program on the Internet. Unpack the archive to any folder. Most versions of this program do not require installation. But not all. If you downloaded a version of the program that needs installation, then you need to install it on the hard disk of your computer.
Step 4
Run the program. In its first window, find the Package line. The value of this line is the socket version of your processor. Now that you know it, you can browse the Internet to see which processors are suitable for your motherboard and choose the model that best suits you. And then purchase it from the store. Also, many online stores have online services with which you can choose a processor for your socket.
Step 5
If you don't want to bother looking for a processor, you can simply write down the motherboard socket version. Then go to any computer store, show it to the seller, and he in turn will help you choose a processor that will be compatible with your motherboard.
