The avi and mpg video formats are among the most common. Mpg (mpeg) is a lossy compression standard. This achieves a reduction in the weight of files with minimal loss in image quality. One video format can be converted to another using special programs.

Step 1
Download and install Format Factory Media Converter. The program is free. After starting, you will see a window on the left side of which you can select the desired format. Click All to mpg. To select a file for conversion, click "File". Specify the destination folder for saving by clicking the "Select" button. If you want the file to be saved in the same folder, select the "Result in the original folder" item.
Step 2
To specify all the necessary parameters, go to the "Video Settings" window (click the "Configure" button). The "Type" field will contain mpg format. In the "Video size" field, set the desired video resolution or leave the same (default). You can reduce the size, but it is not desirable to make it larger, otherwise the image quality will suffer greatly. Select the bitrate (kb / s), although you don't need to set it manually - it changes when you resize the video. In any case, do not set the bitrate higher than that of the original file.
Step 3
In the "Video codec" field, the default is mpeg1 or mpeg2 (depending on the video quality you selected in the "Profile" field). This is a program that compresses and reproduces a digital stream, performs encoding. Different codecs compress (and convert to another format) differently, using different algorithms. In the "Frame" field, leave the default value, the fewer frames per second, the worse the quality. Adjust the aspect ratio of the screen (3: 4, 3: 2, etc.) in the Sides field as desired.
Step 4
In the "Audio codec" field, by default, there is a codec corresponding to the selected video quality (for video in vcd pal - mp2 codec, etc.) You can also adjust the frequency, audio bitrate, number of channels, volume, or turn off the sound altogether.
Step 5
Select subtitle file, watermark file if necessary. When you're done, click OK.
Step 6
To check the result of the settings, go to "Settings" and click on video playback. In the same place, you can cut out the desired section of the file (if necessary) or select a specific area of the image for conversion and saving. If everything suits you, click OK.
Step 7
In the main window "Format Factory" press "Start" - video conversion will begin.
