Step 1
Load a photo in Photoshop for further work, and then create a new layer. In the Toolbox select the Marquee Tool and inside a new layer draw a square selection with the same indent from the edges.
Step 2
Then press Ctrl + Shift + I to invert the selection. Now you have a selection in the form of a box around the edges of the layer. Fill the selected frame with white. You can also take any other color that suits your photography style.
Step 3
Move the layer with the photo in the layers palette so that it is above the layer with the filled frame.
In the Select menu, select the Reselect option and create a layer mask on the photo layer (Create layer mask> Hide selection). You will see how the outer areas of the photo are covered by the frame.
Step 4
After that activate the layer mask, take a soft white brush and carefully paint over in mask mode those areas that should be developed above the frame. Vary the size of the brush to bring out finer details and outlines. If you are mistaken, change the brush color to black and paint over the unnecessary part - it will disappear again.
Step 5
For the greatest effect of three-dimensionality, add a shadow for the object protruding into the frame. Create a new layer and place it between the two existing layers.
Step 6
Set the base color to a dark gray and use a soft brush to paint shadow outlines in the same place where the volume fragment of the photo is located on the previous layer. After that open Gaussian Blur in filters and specify a blur radius of 5 pixels. Move the shadow down slightly to make it look more realistic.
