An e-book is a special tablet computer used to display text information that is stored electronically. This term is used not only for the reading device itself, but also for books recorded in electronic form.

The main difference between an e-reader and other tablet computers is the presence of much fewer functions, but at the same time, a significant increase in battery life. The latter is achieved using a special display made using E-ink technology (electronic paper). Such a screen displays several shades of gray and works only at the moment when you turn the page. No energy is expended to display the current text.

The first models of these devices appeared in the 90s of the last century, but they did not become widespread due to the LCD screen used, which caused some inconvenience when viewing books. Much more popular were e-books, which were equipped with e-paper as a screen. Such models began to be produced in 2007. Most modern e-books use an LCD display. These devices allow not only reading books, but also surfing the Internet, watching videos and much more. In addition, today almost every model is equipped with a touch screen, which will allow you to edit the text itself.

E-books use a processor using the ARM architecture, which results in noticeably lower power consumption. As a rule, smartphones were mainly equipped with such processors. The operating system is one of the varieties of Linux with a simplified interface, which is designed for reading books, viewing photo albums, listening to music.

The main advantages of these devices are as follows:
- You can store more than a thousand books in one e-book, the device is much smaller and lighter than a regular paper book;
- You can independently customize the output format (for example, in one or more columns), font size, style;
- The device is equipped with a huge number of various functions that make it easier to work with text (for example, search, clicking on links, bookmarks, displaying notes, dictionary);
- Texts in electronic form are free or much cheaper than conventional paper books.

Among the disadvantages are the following:
- Like any other electronic device, book readers are sensitive to physical impact;
- Most of the models are of high price;
- E-books require recharging the built-in batteries from time to time.
