It is customary to call work groups an association of computers. As a rule, they are created for easier access to resources - network printers, shared folders. To connect a computer to a workgroup in the Windows 7 operating system, you need to change some settings.
Instructions
Step 1
Before proceeding with the connection, make sure that the network policy settings (if the computer is connected to a network) do not prohibit this procedure. Log on to the system as an Administrator or a member of the Administrators group and invoke the System component. This can be done in several ways.
Step 2
While on your desktop, right-click on the "My Computer" item. In the context menu, select the last item "Properties". The required window will open. Alternatively, open the Control Panel through the Start button or the Windows key. In the Performance and Maintenance category, left-click on the System icon.
Step 3
In the "System Properties" dialog box that opens, go to the "Computer name" tab and click on the "Change" button opposite the inscription "To rename a computer or join it to the domain manually …". An additional window "Computer name change" will open.
Step 4
In the "Is a member" group, set the token in the "Workgroup" field and specify the name of the workgroup you want to connect to in the line intended for this. Remember that the computer name and workgroup name do not have to be the same. Also keep in mind that the name of the working group cannot contain more than fifteen printable characters, cannot contain specific characters, except for the following:;: "* + = |?,
Step 5
After making all the necessary changes, click on the OK button in the "Change computer name" window, it will close automatically. In the "System Properties" window, click on the "Apply" button and close the window with the [x] icon or the OK button.
Step 6
To check which computers are connected to a workgroup, open the Network Neighborhood folder from the desktop or from the Start menu. In the Common Tasks pane on the left side of the window, select Show Workgroup Computers. You can also select the "Go" item in the "View" menu and a sub-item with the name of a specific working group.
