If you have purchased a new hard drive or you need to connect a third-party hard drive to your computer, this is not difficult to do. Depending on the type of hard drive connection, you may need power cables and a ribbon cable to connect to the motherboard.

Necessary

  • - computer;
  • - screwdriver;
  • - HDD.

Instructions

Step 1

Remove the side cover of the computer to expose the motherboard. It is best to do this with the computer turned off. You need to connect the hard drive directly to the computer's power supply and to the motherboard only when the power is off. It is also worth noting that the computer should not only be turned off, but also completely disconnected from the mains.

Step 2

Inspect the connectors on the board and loose connectors from the power supply. The power connector of the power supply wires must exactly match the connector on the hard drive. The power supply for SATA and IDE hard drives is different: for the former it is a flat connector, usually black, made in the form of a very elongated letter G. For IDE hard drives, this is a white four-pin connector.

Step 3

Connect the power to the hard drive by carefully connecting the connector according to the key. Connect the cable or ribbon (in the case of IDE) from the motherboard. For IDE hard drives, it is imperative to observe the priority of the master and slave parameters if another device is connected on the loop. Fasten the hard drive so that it is confidently in a horizontal position if you did not screw it into the case. Turn on the computer and go to the BIOS section to check if the hard drive is detected by the motherboard.

Step 4

All operations with the power supply of the internal components of the computer must be carried out with the power supply disconnected from the mains. Use adapters if you need to connect the hard drive without interrupting the computer. Other parts of a personal computer are changed in a similar way, only they are connected slightly to different connectors. In general, we can say that even a novice user can connect a hard drive on a computer.
