After several months of using a personal computer, its owner already has a certain amount of information that needs to be saved. Over time, its volume increases, and you already want to somehow protect the stored data from computer malfunctions, your own random errors and prying eyes. And if a computer is used for work, the issue of storing information does not arise gradually, but immediately rises to its full height.

Step 1
Start by defining the file format in which the information will be stored. When it comes to the data used in your work by any programs, you are limited in choosing only the storage formats provided by these applications. For example, to record information that the spreadsheet editor Excel calls from time to time, it must be placed in xls, xlsx or txt files. And the information used by scripts must be contained in text files or in the formats of any database management system. If during storage no programs access this data, you can change their format - for example, pack it into rar archives.
Step 2
Having decided on the format, estimate the resulting total volume of files with information. The range can be very wide - from a few kilobytes (for example, information about passwords, logins, and other personal data), up to hundreds of gigabytes (for example, a video library). Depending on this parameter, select a storage device - it can be, for example, an optical disk for 740 megabytes, a flash drive for 8 gigabytes, an external hard drive for 1 terabyte. Of course, in this case, you must take into account the amount that you will have to spend on storing information on a particular medium. Sometimes you can do without purchasing a new device - for example, personal data in an encrypted and packed in an archive file can be stored in a mobile phone or audio player.

When choosing a location for backups of various information, do not forget about "virtual space". There are a large number of services on the Internet for storing user files up to several gigabytes in size. You can upload prepared files to one of the servers, or use a service (for example, Multiupload.nl), which will place copies of each uploaded object on several independent file hosting services.
