To open the main Windows OS menu located on the "Start" button, just hover the mouse cursor over it and click the left button. However, sometimes, as a result of careless user actions or a failure in the system, this button simply disappears from the desktop. In this case, the question arises of how to start the main menu.

Instructions

Step 1

To return the "Start" button (and with it the menu) to its original place, you need to find out the reason for the disappearance. To start the investigation, press the WIN key - if the main menu opens, then the problem is only in resizing or positioning the taskbar on which the Start button is located. If, when the menu is open, you do not see the panel, but only a strip of several pixels appears, then move the cursor over it and, with the left mouse button pressed, drag it to the desired size.

Step 2

If the taskbar along with the "Start" button appears when you press the WIN key, then right-click it, select Properties, and uncheck the box next to "Automatically hide the taskbar".

Step 3

If pressing WIN also does not open the main menu, and there are no shortcuts on the desktop, then the problem lies in the non-working Windows Explorer. You can start it using the "Task Manager". Press CTRL + alt="Image" + Delete to launch it.

Step 4

The manager will open to the Applications tab where you need to click the New Task button in the lower right corner. This will launch the Create New Task dialog.

Step 5

Enter explorer and click OK. This will launch Windows Explorer, which will restore the normal operation of the Start button and the main menu.

Step 6

If explorer cannot be started using this method, it is likely that its executable file (explorer.exe) is damaged or deleted. This means that it needs to be replaced. The easiest way is to find and download it on the Internet, but putting a new copy in the place of the old one will be a little more difficult - after all, you cannot use the operating system of this computer for this. This means that on the Internet you also need to find an image of a boot disk (or a floppy disk), download it and write it to a disc along with a new explorer file. Then boot from this disk and place the new file in the WINDOWS folder of the computer's system disk. After that, the normal operation of the OS, including the menu on the "Start" button, should be restored.
