The volume control is installed between the output of the computer sound card and the input of the amplifier. It is usually included in the amplifier. But if the device is homemade, the volume control may be missing.
Instructions
Step 1
Prepare one jack plug (stereo, headphone, 3.5mm diameter) and two cinch plugs (also known as RCA and Asia).
Step 2
Take two identical variable resistors with a nominal value of 20 to 200 kilo-ohms. Place them on a table so that the leads of both resistors are facing down and the axes are facing you.
Step 3
Connect the left terminals of both resistors to the common contacts of all three connectors: "jack" and two "tulips".
Step 4
Connect the right terminal of one of the resistors to the jack terminal corresponding to the left channel, and the other resistor to its own terminal corresponding to the right channel.
Step 5
Take two capacitors with a capacity of a few tenths of a microfarad. Connect the first of them with one of the terminals to the middle contact of one variable resistor, the second - also one of the terminals to the middle contact of the other variable resistor.
Step 6
Connect the remaining free lead of the first capacitor to the center pin of one connector of the "tulip" type, and the second to the center pin of another of the same connector.
Step 7
If desired, use one dual resistor instead of two separate variable resistors. But then it will not work to adjust the volume on the channels separately. We'll have to add a stereo balance control. It is a single variable resistor with a nominal value of several tens of kilo-ohms. Connect its left lead to the central contact of one of the "tulips", the right - to the central contact of the other. Connect the middle terminal to the common wire.
Step 8
For the tone control, if you want to set it, use only a double variable resistor with a value of about 100 kilohms. At both of its sections, connect the left terminals with the middle ones and connect to the common wire. Connect the right terminal of one section through a 0.2 microfarad capacitor to the middle terminal of one volume control resistor, and the right terminal of the other section through the same capacitor to the middle terminal of the second volume control resistor.
Step 9
Install the volume control into the case.
Step 10
Disconnect power to the computer and amplifier. Connect "Jack" to the line-out of the sound card, and "tulips" - to the line-in of the amplifier.
