The file format, usually consisting of 2-4 letters written after the period in the file name, indicates that the file belongs to one type or another. The file format, also called an extension, can be renamed, provided that the new entered format replaces the old format, otherwise the file will simply not be readable.
Necessary
Total Commander program
Instructions
Step 1
The format or extension also indicates that the file belongs to the executing program. For example, *.html files are files of Internet pages, which means that it is advisable to open them in browsers. The *.docx extension indicates that this is a Microsoft Word 2010 text file, it cannot be opened in earlier versions of MS Word or any other text editor.
Step 2
How do you change the format? To do this, simply rename it if the file does not need to be converted. To rename files in Windows, you need the Total Commander program - it is a shareware file manager.
Step 3
After installing and launching it, you will see on the screen the working area of the program, consisting of two identical windows. The windows display the structure of your hard drive, just like you can see it in Windows Explorer. Select any window and find the desired file in it. Click on the file name with the left mouse button once, wait three seconds and click on the file one more time. The file name will be highlighted and you can easily rename the file extension after the period. After renaming, press the “Enter” key.
