Changing the computer name displayed on the network is a standard procedure in all versions of Windows and does not imply the involvement of additional third-party software.
Instructions
Step 1
Call the main system menu of Windows XP version by clicking the "Start" button and call the context menu of the item "My Computer" by right-clicking. Specify the "Properties" item and use the "Change" button in the "Computer name" section. Enter the desired value for the new name in the "Computer name" line and confirm your choice by clicking the OK button. Authorize the execution of the selected action by clicking one more OK button and apply the changes made by clicking the "Yes" button in the system request window (for Windows XP).
Step 2
Open the main system menu of Windows versions Vista or 7 by clicking the "Start" button and invoke the context menu of the "Computer" item by clicking the right mouse button. Specify the "Properties" item and go to the "Computer name, domain name …" tab of the "System" dialog box that opens. Expand the "Change parameters" node and authorize the execution of the selected action by clicking the "Continue" button in the system request window.
Step 3
Apply the "Change" button in the new dialog box and enter the desired value for the new name in the "Computer name" line. Confirm your choice by clicking OK twice and select the "Close" option. Apply the changes made by clicking the "Restart now" button in the system request window (for Windows Vista / 7).
Step 4
Use the built-in tool Netdom.exe to remotely change the name of a computer on the network. Note that a prerequisite for the success of the operation is the definition of local administrator accounts in Active Directory and the indispensable definition of the computer account object itself.
Step 5
Use the syntax netdom renamecomputer old_computer_name / newname: new_computer_name / userd: domain_name_admin_account / hfsswordd: * / usero: local_admin_name / passwordo: * in the command interpreter text box and authorize the action by pressing the function key Enter.
