Setting a password to turn on the computer can be performed even by a novice user through the BIOS. This operation does not require (but allows) the use of additional third-party software.
Instructions
Step 1
Repeatedly press the Delete function key immediately after turning on the computer to launch the BIOS setup window. Depending on the version of the installed operating system, the F1, Esc, Tab keys can also be used.
F2 is considered to be the standard key for invoking the BIOS program in laptops. In Windows Vista, it is recommended that you restart your computer from the main Start menu, or use the power on / off button to turn off your computer completely.
Step 2
Go to the Security tab (depending on the version of the operating system, the term BIOS Setting Password may be used) and specify the desired password value in the User Password item of the main menu of the program window.
Step 3
Go to the Bios Features Setup section and specify the System value in the Security Options parameter.
Step 4
Return to the Security tab and enter a different password for the Supervisor Password for the Supervisor user. This action will additionally insure against accidental or erroneous changes in the settings of the computer system.
Step 5
Select the Save and exit setup item to close the BIOS program with saving the changes made to the parameters and click the Yes button in the request window that opens.
Step 6
Use the following additional third-party programs to set a power-on password:
- Homesoft Key;
- WinLock;
- NVD Monitor;
- Outpost;
- Desktop-Lock;
- Limited Access;
- DeviceLock Me;
- AdjustCD.
Step 7
Click the "Start" button to bring up the main menu of the system and go to the "Run" item to install the encryption key hash passwords while saving the selected key on the local computer.
Step 8
Enter syskey in the Open field and click OK to confirm starting the service.
Step 9
Click the Update button and apply the checkbox to the Passwod Startup box to initiate the command.
Step 10
Enter the desired password value in the corresponding field and confirm it by re-entering the same value.
Step 11
Select the Store Startup Key locally check box under System Generated password and click OK to apply the selected changes.
