SMS messages received by a mobile phone with a COM or USB port can be viewed using a computer. To do this, use a terminal emulator and AT modem commands.
Instructions
Step 1
Look in the instructions for your mobile phone for a mention of the ability to control it using AT modem commands.
Step 2
Connect your phone to your computer. Please note that the serial ports of mobile phones operate at 3, 3 or 5 V, and computers - at 12 V. To avoid damaging your mobile phone, use the MAX232 chip in the standard connection scheme. If the computer does not have COM ports, such a device can be connected to USB via an FT232 converter or similar, also in a standard connection scheme, or a cable with a built-in converter. Finally, if the phone is equipped with a USB port (which is the most common), it can be plugged into the corresponding port on the computer directly. To do this, use the correct cord for your device.
Step 3
Some cell phones support the USB port in several modes. Select among them through the menu the mode of operation as a modem. If a Nokia device manufactured after 2009 is detected in this mode as a removable optical disc drive with drivers, switch it to PC Suite mode. Then it will be defined as several devices connected via a USB hub at once. One of these devices will be a modem.
Step 4
Start a terminal emulation program. On Linux it is called Minicom, and on Windows it is called Hyper Terminal. In DOS, you can use the terminal program included in the DOS Navigator package, but it cannot work with USB ports.
Step 5
Select the port to which the phone is connected. Its name depends on which port the phone is connected to and which operating system is used. If the port is selected correctly, the machine should answer OK to the ATZ command.
Step 6
Enter the command AT + CMGR = n, where n is the message number in the list. The content of this message will be displayed. Some telephones are also capable of interpreting the AT + CMGL = "ALL" command, which causes the machine to display all SMS messages at once. Cyrillic encoding in them is usually Unicode, but there are exceptions.
