Step 1

Connect the power supply to an electrical outlet with a suitable voltage. Sometimes the design of the unit involves the presence of switches on the back of the case. With the help of them, either a certain level of operating voltage is set, or the power supply itself is turned on. In the latter case, it is just an additional switch. If there are such switches, set them to the desired position.

Step 2

Since it is not recommended to run one power supply without voltage consumers, connect to it any old devices, for example, a drive or a hard disk, that you do not mind using as control components.

The main problem of starting the power supply without is that when you turn it on normally, that is, when you press the “Power” button on the case of the system unit, the corresponding contacts are closed through the motherboard. Therefore, you will need to simulate its pressing by yourself closing the pins of the connector that supplies voltage to the motherboard. To start the power supply without a computer, manually short the 14 (PS_ON) and 15 (GND) pins on the main connector. Often they correspond to black and green wires. These pins are located on the same side of the connector as the additional retainer that secures it to the corresponding socket on the motherboard. In order not to be mistaken with the contacts, it is better to study the connector diagram of your power supply in advance.
