There are times when you need to turn on the power supply without connecting it to the computer. Often there is simply a need to check whether the power supply unit is working normally after a long break in its operation. Or you just need to check the noise level of its fan before deciding whether to install it in your computer or perhaps look for another model.
Instructions
Step 1
Power supplies that are produced today comply with the ATX standard. All of them have a standard interface for connecting to the computer motherboard. Before performing the operation, which will be described below, check what standard of operation your power supply has. As a rule, this information can be found directly on the PSU itself. The standard of the unit under test should be exactly ATX. If your power supply is of a different standard (which is very unlikely), then the method below will not work for you.
Step 2
Study your power supply carefully. Pay attention to the connector with which it connects to the motherboard, namely the twentieth pin-connector. This is where the contact that starts the power supply is located. Now take a closer look at this connector. There is a latch on one of its sides, with the help of which a connection to the motherboard is established. On the side where the latch is located, you need to find the fourth on the right side of the twentieth pin of the pin interface (a green wire is connected to it, very rarely the color of the wire may be different).
Step 3
Take a short length of wire and strip the insulation from both sides. Connect one end of the wire to the fourth pin (where the green wire is) and the other to any other pin on this connector that fits the black wire. It will be best if you connect to the adjacent, third pin-contact.
Step 4
Then connect the power cable to the unit and then plug it in. Immediately after that, the PSU cooler will start spinning, and the power supply will start working. The process of its work without load should not be long. Check everything you need (noise level, unit operability) and turn off the power supply unit from the network. It is recommended to use this mode of operation of the power supply for no more than five minutes.
