You buy a used or retired computer and notice that it refuses to play sounds. There may be a problem with the audio card itself. But if you are sure that the card is working properly, there is a possibility that the sound is disabled in the BIOS. Therefore, you should not immediately blame the seller for fraud: perhaps the computer was just in the office, where the built-in sound cards are often turned off as unnecessary. So check your BIOS.
Instructions
Step 1
Turn on your computer. White letters will appear on a black screen. To enter the BIOS, in most cases, you must press the Del key before the operating system starts loading. The start button may differ in different BIOS versions. In order not to be mistaken, look at the bottom of the screen. There should be an inscription like press X to enter setup, where X is the BIOS entry button. If you do everything correctly, you will see the directories highlighted in white letters on a blue background.
Step 2
BIOS is the "basic input / output system" of the computer hardware and devices connected to it, including the clock, Plug'n'play system, USB, etc. Devices are categorized by type and, depending on the accessories, are located in certain tabs.
Step 3
Use the arrow keys to select the option you want and press Enter. The onboard sound card will be located under the Integrated Peripherals or Advanced tab - again, depending on the BIOS model.
Step 4
Find AC97 Audio Select or Onboard Audio Controller (or any other similar name containing the word audio). If Disabled is written opposite the item, it means that the audio device is disabled. Change this setting - press Enter and select Enabled.
Step 5
Follow the prompts printed at the bottom of the screen to save your settings. If it says F10 - Save, it means that by pressing the F10 button, you save the parameters. Perhaps there will be no such function, then go to the main BIOS menu - press Esc and you will be taken to the previous item. Choose Save & Exit setup (or Exit & Save Change).
Step 6
The system will ask the question highlighted in red: Save to CMOS and EXIT (Y / N)? It means “Save settings and exit (Yes / No)?”. Press the Y key. If you doubt the correctness of your actions, press the N key or select the Exit without saving item before that, which means "Exit without saving."
Step 7
The computer will reboot. Do not go into BIOS any more, let the operating system boot. When it boots up, the system boot callsign will sound from the speakers. This will determine if the sound has turned on.
