There are five FSMO roles on Windows: schema master, domain naming master, infrastructure master, RID master, and PDC emulator. The system administrator can transfer these roles through the management console snap-ins. In this case, both computers must be connected to the network.

Instructions

Step 1

Click on the "Start" button on the control panel, select the "Programs" menu and go to the "Administrative Tools" section. Right-click the Active Directory Users and Computers icon and select Connect to Domain Controller from the list. This step does not need to be performed if you are on the domain controller whose role you plan to transfer.

Step 2

Transfer the roles that exist separately for each of the domains: infrastructure master, RID master, and primary domain controller. To do this, select the required domain controller and click the OK button. Right-click on the Active Directory Users and Computers shortcut and select Operations Masters.

Step 3

Open the Change Operations Master dialog box and select the RID, PDC, or Infrastructure tab that you want to match the role you transfer. Click the "Change" button, confirm the transfer of the role by clicking the OK button. After that, click the OK button again and close the dialog box by clicking the Cancel button.

Step 4

Perform the same operation to transfer the domain naming master role. However, in this case, the Active Directory Domains and Trusts component is used.

Step 5

Register a dedicated tool to transfer the schema master role. To do this, click the "Start" button, write the command "regsvr32 schmmgmt.dll" and press Enter. After a while, a message appears that the registration is complete. After that go to "Start" and write "mmc" in the "Run" command. The "Console" menu will appear, in which select "Add or remove snap-in" click on "Add".

Step 6

Select the Active Directory Schema snap-in, click OK and close the dialog box. Right-click on the "Active Directory Scheme" icon that appears and select "Change Domain Controller", enter a name and click OK. Next, go to the Operations Masters command, transfer the role and save the changes.
