All modern digital video formats support embedding of one or more audio tracks. This is very convenient, and therefore the vast majority of video content is distributed and stored with embedded audio. However, sometimes, before creating a collage, adding alternative "voice acting" or music, you need to remove the sound from a movie, video or commercial.

VirtualDub 1.9.9 is a free video processing application (downloadable from virtualdub.org)

Instructions

Step 1

Upload the video file to the VirtualDub editor. To do this, press the Ctrl + O hotkeys, or select the "Open video file …" item in the "File" section of the main application menu. In the displayed file selection dialog, navigate to the required directory. Select the video file in the directory listing. Click the "Open" button. You can also use dragging and dropping a file into the program window as a quick alternative to the described actions.

Step 2

Disable converting and copying audio data when processing the file. In the main menu of the application, click on the item "Audio". In the expanded child menu, check the "No Audio" item.

Step 3

Put the app into direct copying of video stream data. Click on the "Video" item in the main menu and check the "Direct stream copy" item. In this mode, the video will not be processed when the file is saved, which will greatly increase the processing speed and prevent image quality degradation.

Step 4

Save a copy of the movie file without audio track. Click the "Save as AVI …" item in the "File" section of the main application menu. The "Save AVI 2.0 File" dialog will be displayed. Select the directory in which the video will be recorded, enter the file name. Click the "Save" button.

Step 5

Wait for the video to finish recording. If the size of the original data is large enough, the saving process can take a long time. Statistical information regarding the progress of the process will be displayed in the "VirtuaDub Status" window. In particular, in the field "Projected file size" you can see the value of the estimated size of the resulting file, and in the fields "Time elapsed" and "Total time (estimated)" - the elapsed and estimated time of the operation, respectively.
