The monitor must run at a specific frequency for high-quality image reproduction. In the event that the frequency differs from the permissible - for example, too low, the eye will notice the flickering of the screen. Working behind such a monitor adversely affects vision, so it needs to be adjusted.
Instructions
Step 1
In most cases, the default monitor frequency is set by the operating system and does not need to be adjusted. But sometimes - for example, after repairing the monitor, the screen flickering becomes noticeable. In this case, the monitor frequency must be changed. Remember that flickering is only possible with CRT monitors. LCD monitors do not flicker and do not need high refresh rates.
Step 2
To change the refresh rate of the screen in Windows XP, open: Start - Control Panel - Display. In the window that opens, select "Options", then click the "Advanced" button and select the "Monitor" tab.
Step 3
You will see a window in which there will be a section "Monitor settings". Select the required refresh rate from the options in the list. These are the frequencies supported by this monitor. After selecting the frequency, click "OK". If the picture parameters are not satisfactory to you, try a new frequency or return to the original one.
Step 4
Leave the checkbox next to Hide Modes That Monitor Cannot Use. Attempting to clear the check box and use unsupported modes may damage the monitor or cause unstable images. When the monitor is operating, there should be no extraneous sounds - in particular, a squeak from the line scan module (in the case of using a monitor with a cathode-ray tube).
Step 5
In the Windows 7 operating system, the monitor frequency is adjusted in a similar way. Open: Start - Control Panel - Appearance and Personalization. Select Adjust Screen Resolution, then Advanced Options. Open the "Monitor" tab and select the required refresh rate.
Step 6
Changing the refresh rate in Linux is more difficult. If you are using KDE, use the kxconfig program, it allows you to set the desired refresh rate values.
Step 7
If you do not find the above program or are using Gnome, you need to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Open it, find the "Monitor" section. It must contain the following lines: HorizSync hmin-hmax and VertRefresh vmin-vmax. The specific values for hmin-hmax and vmin-vmax depend on the monitor used, see the accompanying documentation for their values.
