Sometimes users of a personal computer are faced with the fact that the operating system does not restart after choosing the appropriate action. This can happen for completely different reasons.
Instructions
Step 1
Make sure to restart your computer correctly. Click on the Start Menu button in the lower left corner of your desktop. Click on the arrow to the right of the "Shutdown" item and select "Restart" in the list that appears. If there is no problem with the system, the computer should automatically restart.
Step 2
Close all currently running applications if pressing the appropriate key does not restart the system. Wait a bit: some applications take a long time to save data and shutdown. If an application hangs and does not respond to your actions, or the system does not restart even if there are no open program windows, press the Ctrl + Alt + Del key combination to launch the Task Manager.
Step 3
Make sure that the Applications tab in the Task Manager is empty, otherwise select the frozen programs and click the End Task button to force them to terminate. Next, go to the "Processes" tab. Take a look at the list of current processes and see if there is a name you know among them. Sometimes, after the application terminates, its process remains active, due to which the system may freeze and not respond to user requests. Force end all user processes, then close Task Manager and try restarting the system again.
Step 4
Remember if you downloaded operating system updates from the Internet. They are installed exactly when the computer is restarted, which increases the duration of this process. Monitor the behavior of the system and see if any messages about the installation of the downloaded updates appear on the screen.
Step 5
Scan the system using an antivirus with an updated protection base. Some viruses and malware can disrupt the system and cause various problems, including the inability to reboot.
Step 6
Try to restore the system to the point where the reboot was carried out without problems. In the Utilities folder on the Start menu, select System Restore. Pick a suitable rollback point and follow the process. After its completion, the computer will be restarted, and the system will return to the previous state, when the errors that appeared were still absent.
