There are many technologies and methods for distributing files over local and global networks. On Windows, you only need to make it public to allow external users to retrieve data from local directories. But this approach is not without its drawbacks. Therefore, in order to securely distribute files over the network and flexibly regulate access to them, it is worth installing and configuring a file server.
Necessary
- - installed IIS server on Windows;
- - administrator rights.
Instructions
Step 1
Start the IIS Server Management add-in. Go to the control panel by clicking on the "Start" button in the taskbar on the desktop, highlighting the "Settings" section, and then clicking on the "Control Panel" item. In the current window, find and open the "Administration" shortcut. Then open the Internet Information Services shortcut.
Step 2
Proceed to setting up a file server. On the left side of the Internet Information Services window, expand the (Local Computer) section and then the FTP Sites section. Highlight Default FTP Site. Select Action and Properties from the menu.
Step 3
Configure the basic parameters of the file server. In the Properties: Default FTP Site window, click the FTP Site tab. In the "Identity" group of controls, enter the IP address and port on which the server should accept connections. In the "Connection" group of elements, specify the parameters for the restrictions on the number of connections and the timeout limit. Select the "Keep log" checkbox and select its format if you want to save detailed information about the actions performed by users in the system log.
Step 4
Configure the settings for accessing the file server. Switch to the "Secure Accounts" tab. Select the "Allow anonymous connections" checkbox, specify the name of the unprivileged local user and, if necessary, his password if you want to be able to access the server anonymously. Configure the list of FTP site operators on the same tab.
Step 5
Specify the text messages that the server sends when various situations arise. Switch to the "Messages" tab. Fill in the fields "Title", "Greeting", "Exit", "Maximum number of connections".
Step 6
Specify the directory that will be the root in the server directory structure. Switch to the "Home Directory" tab. Select the "Directory of this computer" option. In the group of controls "FTP site directory" in the text box "Local path" specify the full path to the target folder, or click the "Browse" button and select the directory in the dialog that appears. Set the "Read" option if you need to allow remote users to download files from the server. Set the "Write" option so that remote users can post files to the server. Activate or deactivate the option "Logging" to save information about user actions. Click OK.
Step 7
Add virtual directories to the server's directory structure, if necessary. Click on the "Default FTP Site" item in the left pane with the right mouse button. In the menu, select the items "Create" and "Virtual directory …". Follow the instructions in the wizard.
Step 8
Adjust the access rights to the created virtual directories, if necessary. Right-click on the item corresponding to one of the virtual directories. In the context menu, select "All Tasks" and "Permission Wizard …". Follow the instructions in the displayed wizard.
