The Windows file manager (File Explorer) still does not have batch file renaming functionality. Therefore, to change the names of all files in the folder, you will have to use some program that is absent in the standard OS distribution. You can replace Explorer with another file manager (for example, Total Commander), or you can use a program that specializes in batch renaming files.

Flash Renamer

Instructions

Step 1

Use, for example, RL Vision's Flash Renamer software. When installed in the system, it adds an additional command to the context menu of directories, so to start the procedure for renaming files of any folder, just right-click it and select the Start Flash Renamer line from the menu.

Step 2

Select the desired section in the Flash Renamer window - there are five of them. If you need to rename audio files, then in the Music section there are options for working with MP3 tags. The program can read tags from files and use them to name the files in the format you specify. If necessary, the program can edit the tags themselves in the files.

Step 3

Select the Numbers section if the files in the folder need to be numbered in some way. The program can add numbering to the beginning and end of existing file names, or completely replace names with numbers. The numbering step, the bit width of the numbers, the separator between the number and the file name can also be changed.

Step 4

Use the General section if you need, for example, to replace a word or any other fragment in the name of each file with a different combination of letters and numbers. There are also options for changing the case of letters in file names, including capitalization of each word or just the first and random case selection for each letter. You can delete a specified number of characters from all file names in a folder starting from any position from the beginning or end of the name, or you can insert a fragment that you specify at any position. There are options for handling spaces in file names - you can remove spaces at the beginning of names, at the end, replace double spaces with single ones.

Step 5

Use the Presets section, which contains predefined sets of the most commonly used batch file name processing operations.

Step 6

Select the files in the right pane of Flash Renamer to be renamed using the method you specified. These can be all files in a folder or only some of them.

Step 7

Specify in the Include section in the upper left part of the program window whether you want to rename only the names of files or directories from this folder too. Here, check the Subfolders box if the files in all subfolders also need to be renamed.

Step 8

Specify whether to rename only the file names, only their extensions, or both parts of the name. To do this, use the Process Name and Process Extension checkboxes in the Options section.

Step 9

Click the Rename button when all the necessary settings have been made. The renaming process will begin, and you will see a report on its progress in a separate window.

Step 10

Click the Close button on the file name change report window. If it becomes necessary to undo the renaming, click the Undo button.
