It is most convenient to work in a multi-window Windows environment using a mouse manipulator, or a mouse, as it is usually called. A couple of presses of the right and left keys makes it possible to use all the commands of the context menu, switch between tasks and manage system processes. Therefore, the failure of the mouse can seriously complicate the user's work.
If the mouse is connected to the system unit via the PS / 2 connector (a round socket on the rear panel, next to which there is sometimes a mouse image), it cannot be connected or disconnected "hot", i.e. when the computer is on. A short circuit may occur, to which the PS / 2 ports are very sensitive.
If you see that the cursor is not moving and the system is not responding to mouse keystrokes, shut down the computer using the keyboard. Press Ctrl + Esc or Win to open the Start menu. Use the Down Arrow and Enter to select the Shut Down command and confirm the shutdown request by pressing OK.
Disconnect the mouse cable from the port and carefully, trying not to bend the pins of the electrodes, reconnect - the problem may be a loose connection. Turn on your computer. If the mouse works, then you did everything right.
USB ports are hot-pluggable. However, if the mouse connected via USB does not work, nevertheless turn off the system unit before changing the connector - a reboot may help.
If the problem persists, test the mouse on a different computer. If the cursor is moving and the keys are working, there may be a bad port on your system unit or there is a software problem.
To identify the source of trouble, alternately connect known working mice to the computer through the PS / 2 and USB ports. Usually no special drivers need to be installed - standard Windows utilities are also suitable. If none of the devices work, it is most likely a software problem.
Using the Win keys, directional arrows, Tab and Enter, from the Start menu go to Control Panel, activate the System icon, in the Hardware tab, click Device Manager, then open the Mouse and other pointing devices list … Use the Shift + F10 combination to bring up the context menu and select the "Delete" command, then reboot. The system detects a new device and reinstalls the drivers on it.
If you have connected new hardware or installed a new program, the cause may be a hardware conflict. Login to the system in safe mode when it boots in minimal configuration. To do this, restart your computer and press F8 after a short beep. Select "Safe Mode" from the boot modes menu. Answer “Yes” to the system's request to continue working in this mode. If the mouse works fine, remove the new hardware and software. Boot into normal mode.
If System Restore is enabled on your system, try selecting Last Known Good Configuration from the Mode Selection menu. The system will offer you several system restore points to boot. Pick the one that is closest to the time the problems started. If the attempt fails, try a different date.
You can enter the system recovery mode in a different way. When rebooting, select the "Safe Mode" option, but when asked by the program to continue working, answer "No". After that, you will be prompted to select a restore point.
Windows OS has a built-in "Troubleshooter". To launch it, go to the "Control Panel" using the keyboard and expand the "Mouse" icon. Go to the "Hardware" tab using Shift + Tab and press "Diagnostics". Use the Next button to run the diagnostics. Press Shift to select an answer to the system questions. Perhaps, as a result, it will be possible to find out the reason for the inoperability.
If these methods do not help, check your computer for viruses. Download the free AVZ4 program and deploy it on a USB flash drive. Press Win + R and enter the command F: / AVZ4 / avz.exe in the "Open" window, where F: is the name of the removable disk in the system. Start scanning.
If the mouse works, but freezes from time to time, right-click on the free space on the screen, select the "Properties" option and go to the "Options" tab. Click "Advanced" and select the "Diagnostics" tab. Move the "Hardware Acceleration" slider one space to the left and confirm with OK.
