Step 1
Purchase a PC-compatible adapter. The standard controller connects to the set-top box through a special port (not USB-standard), so, one way or another, you will need an additional device. Step 2
There is no direct compatibility between the Xbox controller and Windows XP. In order for the joystick to be recognized correctly, you need a driver package, which can be downloaded from www.windowsgaming.com. You should not look for software on other services in order to avoid viruses and fraud. Unpack the downloaded archive and run the.exe file; then follow the instructions of the installer to install the software.
Step 3
No drivers are required for Windows 7 / Vista. As soon as you insert the gamepad into the USB port of the computer, the device will be recognized automatically (a message about the connection of the gamepad will appear in the lower right corner of the screen). If this does not happen (a stripped-down version of the OS is used), the software for the gamepad still needs to be installed.
Step 4
Not all games recognize the Xbox controller. If you launch pre-Xbox360 products (such as "Crimsonland" or "Thief 3"), your controller will not work or it will not work correctly. This is due to the change in the compatibility standard that took place in 2005-7. In order to solve this problem, you need to download one of the emulator programs, which will allow you to "present" the joystick as an older model.

If you do not have the opportunity to purchase an adapter for a PC, you can always buy exclusively a computer gamepad. Microsoft has released an exact copy of the console controller on the PC market; in addition, third-party firms have created very decent and cheaper copies.
