Sometimes choosing the only picture worthy of being your avatar on a social network or forum is a daunting task. Moreover, when the picture is selected, it may turn out that, according to the rules of the resource on which you created an account, the avatar sizes are limited. However, you can reduce the selected user picture in any graphic editor.

Necessary

  • - Photoshop program;
  • - image.

Instructions

Step 1

Create a document in Photoshop in RGB color mode with the dimensions specified as valid for the user's picture on the resource where your account is registered. To do this, press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + N.

In the New Document Settings window, enter a file name in the Name field. To the right of the Width and Height boxes, select Pixels from the drop-down list and enter numerical values for the width and height of the avatar. In the Resolution field, enter 72, and from the Color Mode drop-down list, select RGB. Click the OK button.

Step 2

Load the photo from which you are going to make an avatar into the editor. The easiest way to do this is to simply drag the image file into the Photoshop window using the mouse, but you can use the Ctrl + O hotkeys.

Step 3

If the size of the selected photo is much larger than the avatar, resize the photo in half. To do this, call the settings window with the Image Size command from the Image menu. Select the Percent unit from the drop-down list to the right of the Width and Height fields in the Document Size panel. Select the Bicubic Sharper option from the Resample Image drop-down list at the bottom of the preferences window. Change the Width and Height from one hundred to fifty and click OK.

Step 4

Select the Move Tool and use it to drag the thumbnail into the new document window with the dimensions of the avatar.

Step 5

If the picture still exceeds the size of the user's picture, resize the picture using the Scale command from the Transform group of the Edit menu. To prevent the image from distorting, click on the Maintain aspect ratio button, which can be seen between the fields with the values of the width and height of the image in the panel under the main menu. Enter a new value in one of these fields. In this case, the second value should change automatically. Press the Enter key and check if the size of the picture has changed enough. If you are satisfied with the transformation result, press the same key again.

Step 6

Save the avatar using the Save for Web command from the File menu. If on the resource where your account is registered there are restrictions not only on the linear dimensions of the avatar, but also on its size in kilobytes, save the optimized image. To do this, click on the 4-Up tab, select the most suitable option and click on the Save button.
