There are several reasons for audio fading in Windows XP operating systems. First of all, it is worth checking if the speakers are connected correctly and if they are not turned off accidentally. If this simple measure does not help, it makes sense to check your system settings and correct them if necessary.

Step 1
Sound in the Windows XP operating system is managed by the Windows Audio service. When installing some new applications for working with sound, this service may be disabled, but the service is not automatically enabled. It is necessary to restore the active state of the service in manual mode. To do this, call the main system menu by clicking the "Start" button, and go to the "Run" dialog.
Step 2
Type services.msc in the "Open" line and confirm the selected action by clicking the OK button. Call the context menu of the Windows Audio service by clicking the right mouse button and select the "Properties" item. Select the "Auto" option from the drop-down list in the "Startup Type" section and click the OK button. Reboot the system to apply the changes made.
Step 3
Return to the main menu "Start" and open the context menu of the item "My Computer" by clicking the right mouse button. Specify the "Properties" item and go to the "Hardware" tab of the dialog box that opens. Use the "Device Manager" button to launch the utility and expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" item in the window that opens.

Find an element with a red X symbol in the list of devices and open its context menu by clicking the right mouse button. Specify the "Enable" command and exit the dispatcher. Check your computer sound.
Step 5
Reboot the system again to enter BIOS mode (typically using the F1 function key). Use the F5 key in the BIOS mode settings window that opens and specify the "Yes" command. Confirm your choice by pressing the Enter key and use the F10 key. Select Yes again and press Enter again. These actions will put your computer's audio hardware into Auto mode. Boot the system in normal mode.

If you cannot restore sound using all of the above methods, perform a system restore.
