It is convenient to use the tray icon to adjust the sound on your computer. As a result of user actions or, in severe cases, after a virus has infected the computer, this icon may disappear.
Instructions
Step 1
If your OS is Windows XP, in the Control Panel expand the Sounds and Audio Devices node. Check the box next to "Show icon …" and confirm your choice by clicking OK. If the checkbox is checked, uncheck it and click OK. Then put the flag in the checkbox again and confirm by clicking OK.
Step 2
If, when you try to select the checkbox, the system message "You do not have the program installed …" appears, from the "Start" menu, run the search bar and enter the file name sndvol32.exe. It should be located in the C: Windowssystem32 folder. If this file is not there, copy it on another computer or on the installation disk and place it in the desired folder.
Step 3
If the item is inactive (highlighted), call the "Open" line with the Win + R combination and enter the regedit command. Find the HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionAppletsSysTray section. Set the Services parameter to dword: 0000001f. To remove the sound icon from the tray, enter 0000001b in the Value section.
Step 4
To solve the problem in Windows Vista and Windows 7, right-click on an unallocated space on the "Taskbar" and select the "Properties" command from the drop-down menu. Click "Customize" and check the "Volume" item in the list. Set the value to "Show icon and notifications" and click on the link "Turn system icons on or off" to check the result.
Step 5
If the item is inactive, call the registry editor with the regedit command. Under HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerTrayNotify, delete the IconStreams and PastIconsStream keys.
Step 6
By right-clicking on the "My Computer" icon, call the drop-down menu and select the "Control" option. Expand the Services and Applications snap-in. In the Services snap-in, find the Generic PnP Device Host. Call the context menu by right-clicking, activate "Properties" and set "Startup type Auto".
