Start by identifying the right hard drive form factor. Standard models are 3 ", 5" or 2.5 "wide. Portable hard drives of the first category are quite bulky and heavy. Sometimes these devices require an AC connection. This feature does not allow them to be used together with mobile PCs outdoors.

Pay attention to the amount of memory on your hard drive. Devices with a form factor of 3.5 inches, as a rule, allow you to record more information than their smaller counterparts. If this characteristic is important to you, choose a 3.5-inch hard drive.

Do not forget to clarify another important feature - data processing speed. Consider not only the direct write speed to the disk, but also the bandwidth of the information exchange channel between the hard drive and the PC. High speed data transfer is provided by USB 3.0 and eSATA interfaces.

Find out if there are any connectors required to connect to other devices. In most cases, the USB port is used. With it, you can connect the hard drive not only to a computer, but also to a TV, speaker system, and so on.

Examine the appearance of your hard drive. Find out what material its body is made of. You can often find hard drives with a metal shell. Such a case protects the drive well from external influences.
Step 6
Remember that certain models of removable hard drives require an active connection of two USB channels at once. Usually information is transmitted through one of them, and power is transmitted through the other. If you plan to use a hard drive with a mobile computer, refuse to buy a hard drive with this feature. First, you may not always be able to connect additional peripherals. And secondly, such hard drives are actively consuming battery power.
