When reconfiguring network equipment or computers, sometimes you need to change the values of the DNS servers and the default gateway. This is usually required to specify the desired computer through which the Internet will be accessed.

Step 1
If you need to configure network equipment, such as a router, then first get access to its settings. Connect the LAN port of the router to the network card of your computer or laptop. Open an Internet browser and enter the router's IP into its address bar. This data can be obtained from the instructions for the network equipment.

Enter your account name and password to access the router settings. Open the WAN menu. Find the Default Gateway or Server Address field. Enter the desired gateway value into it. If you need to set the parameters of DNS servers yourself, uncheck the Get DNS Automatically box and enter the server IP.

Save the WAN menu settings by clicking the Save or Apply button. Restart the router for the device to apply the configured settings.

If you need to change the default gateway address when setting up your computer, then first open the control panel. Select the "Network and Internet" menu and go to the Network and Sharing Center.

Open the Change adapter settings menu. Find the icon for the network card that is connected to the network whose settings you want to change. Click on it with the right mouse button and select "Properties".

Now find the item "Internet Protocol TCP / IP (v4)" and select it. Click the Properties button. Setting the default gateway manually is not possible when using the automatic IP acquisition function. Therefore, activate the item "Use the following IP address" by checking the box next to it.
Step 7
Be sure to enter the static (permanent) IP value for this network card in the "IP address" field. Fill in the "Default Gateway" field with the required numbers. Click the "OK" button to save the settings for this network adapter. Wait for the network settings to update.
