There are situations when it becomes necessary to turn off the laptop webcam. The reasons can be very varied: the desire to remain incognito during virtual communication, saving battery power, or, perhaps, you are irritated by the presence of an all-seeing eye. This can be done in several ways - using the keyboard, through the Device Manager snap-in, and using the software of the camera itself.

Step 1
All laptop models have an Fn key on their keyboards. It is located on the left side of the keyboard next to the Ctrl key. This is a function key, as its name suggests. Pressing this key activates additional functions of other keys on the keyboard. The meaning of these functions is usually marked with blue markings, less often with another contrasting color. The function keys can control the sound level, brightness, turning on and off various devices, including the webcam. Look for the webcam symbol on the laptop keyboard. Most often it is located on one of the keys from "F1" to "F2".
Step 2
While holding down the Fn key, press the webcam key. A crossed-out camera image appears briefly on the screen. The camera is disabled.

You can also disable the webcam using the operating system. To do this, start the Hardware Manager snap-in. " To do this, open the Properties window from the My Computer context menu. In the dialog box that opens, find the Hardware tab and click Device Manager. In the tree-like list of all hardware devices that appears, find "Imaging Device" and click on the "plus" next to it. Right-click on the name of your webcam that appears and select Disable from the context menu. Confirm the action in the request window by clicking the "OK" button. The device will turn off.
Step 4
If you just need to end the video session and there is no need to disconnect the device in the system, then simply close the program window that controls the webcam by clicking on the cross in the upper right corner of the window, or on the “end video call” button in the client program window.
