A local area network is one of the types of computer networks, limited to a certain territorial area. Usually, a local network is a collection of devices located within certain limits (building, room, etc.).

Step 1
There are local area networks that are spread over kilometer areas. Despite the wide range of coverage, they also belong to local ones due to a certain scheme of their construction. Most local area networks are built using Wi-Fi and Ethernet technologies. It is impractical to use fiber-optic cables within a local area network because ordinary twisted-pair cables provide very impressive data transfer rates over short distances.

To create modern local area networks, a wide variety of equipment is used: network hubs, switches, routers, wireless access points, and so on. Typically, the types of local networks are classified according to the way they are administered. The choice of the type of network depends on how it is managed and what scheme was used to build it.

If routing is used in the local network, then its level is usually very primitive. This is due to the fact that private LANs are mostly composed of a small number of computers. The person who controls the operation of a local network and corrects errors in it is called a network administrator.

Typically, specific ranges of IP addresses are used within a LAN. Internal addresses are used to connect computers to each other within a single local network. They are not available for connection from external computers. DHCP is used to prevent IP address conflicts. It allows a device that connects multiple computers on a local network to give each PC a unique IP address.

The VPN protocol is used to connect computers belonging to different local networks. Typically, this link connects the two border routers of each network.
