Step 1

If the cell you want to split was created by combining several cells of the table, then the operation will be very simple. Start by selecting this cell - click on it with your mouse cursor. This will highlight the Merge and Center button located in the Align command group on the Home tab in the menu. Click this button or open the drop-down list attached to it and select the "Unmerge cells" item. In both cases, the result will be the same - Excel will divide the cell into its constituent cells.

Step 2

If you need to split a cell that is not composite, you will have to do a slightly larger number of operations. You need to make the adjacent cells of the table compound, giving the impression that the desired cell is divided into several sections. If a cell needs to be split horizontally, the cells in a row will have to be merged, but for vertical splitting, this must be done with the column cells.

Step 3

Start by highlighting the items you want in a row or column when creating a table. For example, if one cell in a column is to be split into three vertical sections, select the cells in three adjacent columns to the height of the table.

Step 4

Combine the selected range line by line. On the Home tab, expand the drop-down list of the Merge and Place in Center button from the Align command group and select Merge by Rows.

Step 5

Change the width of the merged column - make it equal to the adjacent columns. To do this, select all the combined columns - in this example, there are three of them. Place the cursor over the border between the headings of any two selected columns and drag it to the desired column width. The horizontal size of all selected columns will change synchronously.

Step 6

Select the cell for which all these manipulations are made. Expand the Merge and Center button dropdown again, but this time choose the Unmerge Cells command. This is the last operation, the desired cell after it will be divided into a given number of parts. If it is necessary to divide into horizontal sections, all described actions must be performed with lines.
