How to change the encoding through the Windows registry

In fact, it makes no difference what version of Windows you have, since all of them solve this problem in the same way. The only thing to consider is that in different versions some of the tab names and subheadings in the interface have different names, although everything functions according to the same scheme.

The easy way

The first step is to try to change the encoding through the "Regional and Language Options" settings panel. To do this, click on the "Start" button, go to the Control Panel and select the appropriate tab with settings. After the menu for changing the language opens, go to the "Location" tab and select "Russia". Please note that if you are using the Windows 7 operating system, then this tab will be signed differently - "Location". Next, open the "Advanced" tab and set the Russian language for applications that do not support Unicode. Click OK for the changes to take effect.

Changing the encoding directly through the registry

In the event that the first method did not give results, you can fix the problem of incorrect encoding by editing the registry. However, it should be remembered that if the registry is changed incorrectly, the operation of the entire operating system of the computer may suffer. In case of incorrect editing, you may even have to reinstall Windows. Therefore, care must be taken.

So, first you need to open the registry editor. This can be done by going to "Start", then select "Run", then in the form that appears, enter the regedit command. This will open a window for working with the Windows registry. After examining the program interface, pay attention to its left side, which displays the structure of the registry. Find the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE section in the menu, then click on the small arrow next to it, and then the branch will expand. Next, find the SYSTEM section in the list that appears, in which you are interested in the CurrentControlSet subsection.

Then go sequentially to the sections Control - Nls - CodePage. Further, a panel with parameters will open on the right side of the screen, in which you need to find a parameter named 1252. Right-click on it, and then select "Change" in the drop-down menu that appears. Now you are interested in the "Value" field, in which you need to change the previously specified parameter to c_1252.nls, and then click on the OK button. Everything, you can safely leave the registry editor. All that remains is to restart your computer for the changes you made to take effect.
