The basic settings, hidden in the properties of the network connection, consist of your IP address, subnet mask, default gateway address and other components. When you set up a network or connect to an ISP, you are presented with information about what settings you should set. This also applies to the subnet mask.

Instructions

Step 1

Study the provider's documentation carefully to find the options you need. If you are configuring a connection to an existing local network, look for these parameters in the properties of the network connection on another computer. If you do not have documents from the provider, go to the official website. As a rule, such information is always published on the official portals for users.

Step 2

Connect the twisted pair cable to the network connector on the back of the computer. Wait for the operating system to detect the connection - this will take no more than one minute. Click your mouse on the connection icon and select "Properties". You can go to "My Computer" and then select the shortcut called "Network Connections". All local connections are located here, as well as the Internet connection.

Step 3

Go to the section for configuring TCP / IP connection parameters. Enter the required parameters in the upper part of the window: first the IP address, then the subnet mask (the default value is 255.255.255.0) and the default gateway. If necessary, specify the addresses of the DNS servers. Close the window and save your changes. You can put a tick next to the "Notify about connection" item. In this case, the tray of the personal computer will indicate that your computer is connected to the local network.

Step 4

Wait while the system enters new settings in the network connection parameters. Check the connection parameters in the properties window or by using the ipconfig command on the command line. Test the connection using the ping command - it will indicate the number of packets sent and received by the recipient. If the ping command reports the successful passage of the packets, and you still cannot see the computers on the network, check the other parameters - the computer name and network group.
