Formatting a hard disk partition completely destroys all the information that is written on it. But sometimes it is still necessary, for example, when reinstalling the operating system, infecting with countless viruses. You do not need to have a bootable operating system disk to format any partition on your hard drive.

It is necessary

  • - a computer with Windows OS;
  • - Partition Magic program.

Instructions

Step 1

In order to format any local partition (a partition that does not have an operating system installed), you need to do the following. Go to "My Computer". Next, click on the hard disk partition with the right mouse button, after which a context menu will appear.

Step 2

From this menu, select the "Format" command. After that, a window will appear in which you can select formatting options. In the "File system" section, click on the arrow and select in which file system this partition will be formatted. Please note that for Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems, the only system available is NTFS. Then check the box next to the line "Fast cleaning, anti-aliasing" and click "Start". The formatting process starts. After a few seconds, a notification will appear stating that the disk has been formatted.

Step 3

As for the system drives, the situation here looks different. Simple formatting won't help here. The system simply will not allow itself to be destroyed. You will need Partition Magic to format it. Download one of its latest versions. Install the program on the hard disk of your computer.

Step 4

Start Partition Magic. In its main menu there is a window with a list of all partitions on the hard disk. Mark the system drive by clicking on its letter with the left mouse button (by default, this is drive C). Now, at the top of the toolbar, select the "Section" line. An additional menu will appear.

Step 5

In this menu, select the function "Format", and then in the window that appears - the type of partition. This is the same as the file system. In Windows OS you need to choose either FAT or NTFS. Other versions that will be on this list are file systems for the Linux operating system. Then click OK and wait for the operation to complete.
