Sometimes, in order to install an important program, you may need a lot of free space. But what to do when Windows constantly displays messages that the memory on the hard disk has run out, while there is nothing on it besides utilities. To properly clean up your computer's memory without deleting system files, you need to follow these steps.
Instructions
Step 1
Check your c: drive or desktop for any suspicious folders that contain a ton of unnecessary data.
Step 2
If there are none on the computer, you should delete the temporary computer files that are created by the system to work and then saved. You can get rid of temporary files using Explorer or the file manager. Go to the following folder (C: Documents and SettingsхххххLocal SettingsTemp), delete all its contents. For Windows 7, the path is slightly different - C: UsersхххххAppDataLocalTemp (where "xxxx" is the username). If you want to use Explorer, then you need to enable the display of hidden files and folders in the settings. You can also check the Temp folder located in C: WINDOWS. By completing these steps, you will free up at least 800 MB of disk space.
Step 3
Another way is to shrink system files. If there are files "pagefile.sys" or "hiberfil.sys" on the C: drive, then they can either be reduced or moved to another drive.
Step 4
After that, you can proceed to cleaning any other disk.
To free up some space, you can use standard Windows functions. Open the properties of the disk, select "Disk Cleanup". This program is designed to find temporary and unnecessary files. As soon as the search is completed, mark all unnecessary file types and confirm the deletion.
Step 5
Another way is to compress folders. In order to reduce the size of a specific folder - open its properties and click on the "Other" button, then check the box next to the "Compress content to save disk space". After waiting a few minutes, you will reduce the folder size by about 5-10%.
