Step 1
Use software tools. This action implies the need to artificially limit the rotational speed of your drive for reading CDs. The most popular programs for this operation are VMenedger CD-ROM, CDSlow, Nero Drive Speed. The simplest option from the above is the CDSlow program, which has a flexible system of settings and a Russian-language interface. To test whether your drive can control the speeds, press the Speed Detect / Full Bump button. After that, in the list of available speeds, by clicking the left mouse button, you can change the speed of your drive right in the process of reading the disc.
Step 2
Check the surface of the disc to determine the extent of damage. The CD-ROM Drive Analyzer Pprogram utility will help you with this. After starting the program, its dialog box opens, when you press the "Start" button in the lower right part, the analysis process starts. The results of the process are displayed in the form of a graph. If there is a sharp drop in speed in any part of the graph, then this indicates problems with reading in this place of the disk surface, if the drop in the graph is colored red, this indicates that the disk is unreadable.

To read data from damaged disks, there are special software tools with an improved algorithm for recovering and copying data. The CDCheck utility for copying data has good reviews for recovering information. The program interface is very simple and intuitive. To start recovering data, select it in the directory tree located on the left side of the window.

Click the "Recovery" button. A settings window will open on the top panel - source and destination directories, additional settings. After clicking the "Next" button, the recovery process will start. Before starting a session, it is recommended that the speed of your drive is set to the lowest possible value.

Use hardware. An attempt to solve the problem in this way is to replace the drive with a better one in terms of its characteristics.

Use mechanical disk recovery methods. These methods are best used only when others have failed. The essence of machining is to polish the surface of the disc to make it transparent and remove small and shallow scratches. For polishing, you can use goi paste, which is dissolved in white spirit or kerosene, or toothpaste, half diluted with water. Polish with a soft felt polishing wheel.
