The technology for improving the quality of screen fonts using the Microsoft ClearType anti-aliasing method in some cases has the opposite effect - the legibility of the text becomes unacceptable. This may be due to both the individual peculiarities of the user's vision (increased color sensitivity) and the monitor settings (abnormal resolution, improper gamma correction, etc.). If you are not satisfied with the legibility of the screen fonts, try disabling or adjusting the ClearType settings.

Instructions

Step 1

Start by right-clicking your desktop background if you're using Windows XP. Select the "Properties" line in the drop-down context menu, and the system will launch the component with settings related to the image on the screen. You can do the same through the Control Panel, which is opened by a link in the menu on the "Start" button. In the panel, select the "Appearance and Themes" section and click the "Display" link.

Step 2

In the display properties window, select the "Appearance" tab and click the "Effects" button. Then you will have a choice: disable font anti-aliasing altogether or disable anti-aliasing using ClearType technology.

Step 3

Uncheck the Use the following anti-aliasing method for screen fonts box if you want to completely disable anti-aliasing.

Step 4

Leave the box next to "Use the following anti-aliasing method for screen fonts", and in the drop-down list below, select "Normal" if you decide to disable only ClearType technology.

Step 5

Click the OK buttons in both open windows and the procedure will be completed.

Step 6

If you have Windows 7, start the procedure by pressing the win key or clicking the Start button. In the opened main menu of the OS, enter the text ClearType in the field "Find programs and files". In the search results, click the ClearType Text Customizer link, and the system will launch the ClearType Text Customizer component.

Step 7

Uncheck the Enable ClearType box and click Finish.

Step 8

If you decide to try different ClearType settings, click Next instead of the previous step and follow the instructions in the Screen Font Anti-Aliasing Wizard. When finished, close the window by clicking on the "Finish" button.
