The Windows Registry is a hierarchical database that contains system service information. An incompetent change of its parameters can lead to various unpleasant consequences, up to the need to reinstall the system. However, sometimes you have to manually edit the registry.
Instructions
Step 1
Choose successively "Start" and "Run". In the "Open" window, enter regedit, and then the "Registry Editor" window will open. In the left part of the window, you will see the registry keys in the form of folders, in the right - the values of the key parameters. To change the value of a parameter, double-click on its name and enter new data in the "Value" window.
Step 2
Before changing the contents of the registry, it is better to back it up in case your actions fail. From the File menu, choose the Export command. In the File Name field, enter the appropriate text. Select the desired file type from the "File Type" list. To save a key hive, first open the desired registry key. In the Files of type list, select Registry Hive Files.
Step 3
If the changes you made to the registry were unsuccessful, you can revert it to its original version. Use the Import command from the File menu. To import the entire registry, find the file you want, select it and click "Open". To restore the value of an individual hive of a registry key, open that key. Enter the path to the saved file in the File name field. From the Save as type list, select Registry Hive Files and click Open. If you saved the settings as a registry file with a.reg extension, you just need to double-click on them to import their contents into the registry.
Step 4
To add a key or parameter to the registry, use the New command from the Edit menu. On the left side of the editor window, select the section where you are going to add the hive. Enter a name for the hive and press Enter. When adding a parameter, specify its type, then in the "Name" section, enter the appropriate characters and press Enter.
Step 5
To delete a parameter or section, you can use the "Delete" option from the "Edit" menu. Another way is to open the context menu by right-clicking on the name of the section or parameter and select the "Delete" command.
Step 6
You can prohibit changing the parameters of sections. To do this, boot Windows in protected mode and call the "Registry Editor". From the Edit menu, select the Permissions command and select the check boxes for the access options for each account.
