Most modern archiving programs support such an option as creating archive volumes, that is, splitting one file into several parts when archiving. This allows you to transfer large files to removable media and via e-mail.

Step 1
Call the context menu by right-clicking on the file from which you want to create a multivolume archive in the Windows XP operating system. Select the "Add to Archive" option. The window for creating a new archive of the Winrar program will open. Click on the General tab if it was not automatically opened. Next, find the Split to volumes, bytes field at the bottom of the window. Enter a size to split the archive into parts. Specify the size of the archive volume in bytes, so to find out the required volume size in bytes, open the calculator, enter the file size in megabytes, and multiply by 1024 twice. Enter the resulting size in the program. Click the OK button. The archiving process will begin, click the "Background Mode" button and then the archiving window will move to the tray, where you can see the percentage completed.
Step 2
Run the 7-zip program on Windows XP to create a multivolume archive using this program. In the program window, go to the folder that contains the file you want to archive, select the file or folder, click the Add button on the toolbar. The "Add to Archive" window will open. In it, select the desired archive format, compression level (if you are archiving photos or videos, select "Minimum"), in the "Block size" option, select the size of the archive block you need. Next, go to the "Split into volumes in size (in bytes)" window and set the required value for the size of the archive volume. For example, if you need to split a file into parts weighing 100 MB, enter the size 104857600. After selecting all the necessary settings, click the "OK" button, the creation of a multivolume archive will begin.
Step 3
Use the 7-zip program to create a multivolume archive on Linux. To do this, install it. Start the terminal and enter the command $ sudo aptitude install p7zip-full. After installing the program, enter the command to create a multivolume archive, for example, an archive of the soft folder with a volume of 100 MB is created by the following command: $ 7z a -v100m arch.7z soft /.
