Using the NTFS file system allows you to work with large disks and partitions. In addition, there are several important advantages of the NTFS system over the legacy FAT32 counterpart.
Necessary
- - Partition Manager;
- - system recovery disk.
Instructions
Step 1
To change the format of a local disk that does not have an operating system installed, it is recommended to use the Converter utility. This is a standard feature included with Windows XP and newer operating systems. Open the Start menu and select Run.
Step 2
In the new field, enter cmd command and run Command Prompt as administrator. To do this, hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys and press Enter. Open the "My Computer" menu and look at the letter that is assigned to the desired partition.
Step 3
Enter the command convert D: / FS: NTFS and press the Enter key. The NTFS parameter means that this hard disk partition will be converted to the specified file system. Wait until the converter utility completes.
Step 4
It is worth noting that converting the file system can lead to a complete loss of data on the working local disk. If you want to avoid interruptions during this operation, use an uninterruptible power supply.
Step 5
To convert the system partition of the hard drive, you must load the command line in DOS mode. To do this, use a system recovery disc or a bootable floppy disk.
Step 6
If you want to work in a Windows environment, install the Partition Manager program. After installing the program components, restart your computer and run the pm.exe file.
Step 7
In the first menu, select the Advanced Mode option. Now right-click on the desired local disk, hover over the "Additional operations" item and select the "Convert" item.
Step 8
Specify the parameters for changing the file system of the partition, close the dialog box and click the Apply Changes button. The Partition Manager utility will reboot the computer and perform the necessary operations in DOS mode.
